Originally designed by Finnish designer and interior architect Olavi Hänninen in 1958 for manufacturer Huonekalu Mikko Nupponen, the T-Chair, also known as the Juha Chair, is a distinctive example of post-war Finnish design. Defined by its angular silhouette and architectural simplicity, the chair reflects Hänninen’s ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with a more expressive, sculptural approach to furniture making.
Crafted in solid wood, the design is characterised by its striking T-shaped backrest, gently shaped seat and raw, almost primitive construction that gives the piece its Brutalist character. Early examples were commonly produced in birch or stained elm, materials that emphasised the natural texture and honesty central to Scandinavian modern design during the period.
